Kickstarter!

Since I last wrote an update we've made a lot of progress! First, the biggest news, we've brought in another artist to help speed things along. As I mentioned in the previous post I've never been a very fast artist, and have never, ever been satisifed with my own work (part of the speed issue, re-doing everything all the time!), so I reached out to our artist on Pulse, Vittorio Garofoli, to help me on Perfect Storm. We've each done some layouts, some penciling, and some inking, so it has been a true artistic collaboration, and I could not be happier with the results! Below are the first 3 pages of part 2- See if you can tell who did what? :D

The next big bit of news is that we've decided to go with a Kickstarter campaign rather then submit the book to larger publishers. We figure that, since most of the people who would be interested in reading this new story would be people we know anyway, why not just focus on that. Should a larger publisher be interested in the book after the Kickstarter then we'll cross that bridge when we get to it, but in the meantime we want to just focus on telling the story as best we can.

The Kickstarter will launch on August 1st, 2015, and between now and then you'll see some more posts, more artwork, and more updates here on the site... Finger's crossed!

It occurred to me, while working on the newest Perfect Storm story, that this is the 10th anniversary of Erin's first published appearance! Way back in 2005, on my original Harbor Comics web site, I released a 16 week web strip featuring the original incarnation of Perfect Storm. It was a continuation/re-working of a strip I had originally submitted to Dark Horse Comics for their 2002 Strip Search contest, which was itself an update of a story I did while in college in 1998/9. Obviously, Dark Horse didn't pick it up, but I thought enough of the character to keep plugging away at it...

It's been a long struggle, filled with false starts, actual starts, many stops, re-designs and changes in direction, then worst of all, the loss of our biggest supporter which threw us all off our games for years.

But much like after that initial Strip Search rejection, I've never given up on my girl. Even during the many down periods when continuing to struggle through a "career" in comics brought more pain and suffering then joy, my mind would often wander to thoughts of Erin and what adventures we might someday see her in.

So when I went back to school to become a teacher and was faced with a creative writing assignment, my first thought was to check back in with Erin and see how she was doing, and what I found was a new appreciation for the character, like calling up a friend you haven't seen in years but when you talk it's like no time has passed at all. And, after years of beating myself up for my failures, returning to Erin with the mindset that I was just doing this story for fun rather then trying to please anyone else in hopes of advancing the career I'd given up on, well, I can honestly say that I was enjoying the work for the first time in a long, long time.

Since it was for a writing class I didn't anticipate actually drawing the story, but as the old saying goes: "As soon as I think I'm out..." I'm slower now then I've ever been at producing pages, constantly struggling with the hatred of my own art, but I think the end results have been worth it.

Here is the first completed piece of artwork for the story, the cover, but I am going to have to hold off on showing pages just since they are being submitted to a publisher as we speak. I've got 9 done, and once I hear back from them I will share whatever I can.

Most of all, to all of you who are reading this, thank you for your support! Its been many, many tough years with not much good news, so the fact that anyone would still be checking out the site here is just amazing to me- Seriously, thank you!!!
